Bizarre Bazaar

Elizabeth over at the Bizarre Bazaar (great name!) has a wonderful post on collecting "stuff" and what a burden it can become. I can SO relate to that, and have touched on it in previous posts, especially around Christmas time. Gift giving in this household is definitely of the "what does (s)he need" mode, and if there is no ready answer, there is no gift. The mini tripod I got for my birthday was a no-brainer present from my husband, we certainly missed having one on the numerous occasions we've taken a photo with both of us in it, while on hikes etc. He COULD have got me a new whoop-de-do camera at a good price (he works for Kodak), but hey, my old one is still working (even though I can't seem to take good night time shots outdoors). We just haven't got around to comparing the new models and make a considered decision. And that's what should be behind most purchases, a considered decision.

Anyway, I suggest you hop over to the Bizarre Bazaar and see what Elizabeth has to say about acquiring too much stuff. And that's me done for today's post - great timesaver, that BlogThis button!

I guess I need to go read what she says cuz I have a problem collecting "stuff"! lol Pretty soon I'll either need a bigger house or have to build another one just to hold all my collectibles!

Talk about being a timely post... Our rent was raised and we could no longer afford the garage at the apartments where we live. We used it more as a storage unit anyway, and frankly, the stuff we hauled from Alaska to Montana in 1990 was still in the sealed boxes. From Texas to Washington we got rid of nothing, either. So, we spent a tearful (on Hubby's part) and resolute (on my part) eight weeks going through our stuff and getting rid of tools, paperwork, toys, dishes, clothes, rocks (how many of us carry rocks across country,) collections of things we haven't seen in over a decade, furniture we don't use, etc. We are still going through stuff we don't need. I am trying to convince my family we don't need a banjo and guitar we don't use, but they are trying to convince me that I don't need my hammered dulcimer, lol, and Daughter doesn't need her bowed psaltery. We haven't been successful so far. And no one, no one is willing to discard any more books. We have gotten down to only 8 bookcases and further down we are unwilling to go.

Pea,
interesting what you say about needing to build another house for your collectibles. A couple of years ago we visited a place in country Victoria which had jug museum. This woman had been collecting various jugs (unbelievable variety!) for years until finally, yep, she couldn't fit them in her house anymore. So her hubby built her a one room studio where she had them all displayed. It was a good solution as she earned a bit from it, shared it with others, and I'm sure was less oppressed by having them all around her living space.

Annette, girl, you need help!!

The BlogThis button is good for when you really like someone's post and would like to direct attention to it. Although now I see I should have been looking at just that post so the URL goes straight to that post rather than the blog as a whole. But it looks like people are getting over there anyway. Looks like I should go back and see what others are saying.

Liz is so funny. I was reading that one earlier today as I was working my way down Bloglines.

Now I'm on the V's. Hi Val.

Tammy, you'll have to test drive that new Kodak camera for me. 6 pixels!!!

Sue, I feel really pleased that I've helped getting the discussion going.

Granny, you are so methodical with your blog visits. But of course that means I am always one of the last!

Val, thanks for posting about my blog on yours. I have gotten quite a few very friendly folks coming over to look and leave encouraging comments. I have giggled about the comments calling us kids. I hit 51 this year. To go back to 15 and be sitting in your classrom playing chinese checkers on the lunch hour, or commanding a German city in a war, or trying to drive your VW in the movie... brings up all kinds of emotion.
