Ghostly Melbourne

On the evening of the coldest Melbourne day in yonks*, do the Man Who Cooks and I choose to:
  1. sit at home in front of the TV?
  2. crank the heating up and get out extra blankets?
  3. put on extra layers of clothing?
  4. get stuck into the whiskey?
  5. all of the above?
  6. none of the above?
You would be correct if you said None of the above. No, we chose to proceed with our planned tour of Melbourne's haunted buildings, starting at 6 p.m. and going for a bone-chilling 1.5 hours before we retreated to a restaurant. And amazingly, we were not alone. There were about 20 of us foolhardy souls traipsing around the city, listening to stories about ghostly sightings, alarmingly many by security guards.

The tours are being conducted on Tuesday evenings while the current exhibition of Spooks: Stories of Haunted Melbourne is on at Melbourne's City Museum. I am a great fan of this museum, which is in the lovely Treasury Building (designed by a 19-year-old in the 19th century) to store the gold from the gold rush. Melburnians and visitors to our city would do well to spend some time in this museum, looking at the various exhibitions, the gold vaults, continuously running video of old trams (a Val favorite), and much more. Oh, and the Treasury Building is haunted too...

*a wonderful Aussie word meaning "a long time"; usage also indicates laziness at looking up the exact length of time elapsed since it was this cold

I love the term "yonks" That tour sounds fascinating. Chilly though, but that would be appropriate for a haunted house I think!!

That sounds like such fun (well, apart from the part about being chilled to the bone!)

Yonks is a wonderful word. I love our Aussie slang - it is a language of its own.

Sounds like lost of fun. Did it actually feel spooky whilst on the tour !! Did your hair on the back of your neck stand on end, when that ghost swept past you ??
Did you get any ghostly photos ??
Thanks for sharing.
Take care, Meow

What a great way to spend an evening, and to top if off with a meal out. Reminded me of one of the highlights of our year in England. (I was going to write about it here, but I think I'll do it as a posting. Perhaps I can find a photo to do with it. Thanks, Val, for the idea.)

Hi, Val. Sounds as if Melbourne is a very interesting place with lots of interesting things to do. Thanks for visiting my site and for your comment. Hope you stop by again soon. I will spend some time reading your posts and will bookmark your blog, if that's okay with you.

Love the Aussie slang. I've learned some from reading Jellhead's blog. Would love to visit Australia one of these years, if you weren't so darned far away.

Have a great day.

Over in UK "yonks" was a well used word in the past, you would probably date yourself if you used it today!

Yes, ghost walks are good fun over here too. In Dorchester, there is a guide who dresses in a Roman centurion uniform and takes you out across Roman Dorchester. We have ghostly legions marching the lanes along Eggardon Hill - regularly sited by sane citizens!

Hi Val ~~ What a chilly way to spend an evening - to get scared to death
by ghosts!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks so much for your comments, I am way behind with replies - Glad you liked the mounted cat, I'd rather be dead than singing Satisfaction by Mick Jagger. He still does well at a lot older!! Glad you have enjoyed the cows - they are colourful.
Take care Val, C'mon the Blues!!
Love, Merle.

grrrr @ blogger...I just lost my comment.
Just quickly ~ the ghost tour sounds spooky, and perfect to spend a cold winter's night. I've wanted to go on one for ages. Also the Museum sounds so interesting.
I hope you guys have a lovely weekend on your planned getaway...it all sounds divine.
Kali :-)
p.s. If I don't forget, I will email you the milk buns (bread rolls) recipe.
Your pie and pastry sounds delish. I've only recently started making homemade pie pastry, as my MIL gave me a really simple recipe. (has to be for me to bother with).
Hooroo for now.

I wouldn't mind going on that haunted buildings tour, from a historical point of view, to ascertain why they were thought to be haunted. That can be a very interesting, a story in itself!!

Interesting post!

It sounds like a fascinating way to spend and evening Val, albiet rather chilly. Did you see any ghosts?
Didn't you still have time to get stuck into the whiskey when you came home??? Fancy missing the chance! Actually I don't like whiskey at all. It tastes like dead ants to me ;)
Wine I like!
I'm another Aussie slang fan. Yonks is a new one to me. Love it!
I hope your tank is filling up!

Ooh Val, you're game! Ken and I have been talking about doing the Old Melbourne Gaol night tour for ages, but somehow when it comes to the crunch we decide not to. I've never seen a ghost, but Ken has, several times when he was a lot younger. I would be very concerned if we went on one of those tours and he encountered something that spooked him, and it set off a heart attack!

I've taken those ghost tours in England several times! No one does those better than the brits, so I assume Melbourne's are really good, too.
