Assault on Mt Alexander

Mt. Alexander - the goal. We have been gradually walking the Great Dividing Trail over the past few years. Our total enjoyment of this concept has often been marred by a lack of signage. This walk was another case in point. Fortunately we had the TV tower to aim for. This was going to be the saving grace for us.

Beautiful gum tree, just in front of the Coliban water channel. Until this point, the walk was along an old vehicle track that a 4WD could navigate.

This is where we start to lose the track, but we've got the towers to aim for.

Really lost now, decide to go straight up

View from the top. Signs saying: Warning: steep drops - duh - been there, done that.

Victorian countryside - how lovely it is. By enlarging the photo you can just make out an old stone cottage on the farm.

The view from the top was well worth the climb (says she who didn't do it!). Spectacular views. I love Victoria, but have to confess that I love it more when it's green, as do the farmers. Still, the contrasting colours of yellow grass, red soil and blue hills have a beauty of their own.

I also love gnarled gum trees, and that one is a classic. They have such character.

That's ok, Alice, I can feel your empathy for the climb.

The hills may not yet be green, but there are plenty of greens in the tree foliage.

What a beautiful walk Val and great photos. It's a good thing you had the tower to guide you (and that you avoided the steep drops) :)

Loved seeing more of your country! It's such a different type of terrain than CA isn't it! It has a beauty all it's own!

I've always loved the Victorian countryside, and the huge variety of gum trees. In California they planted only the one kind, so people don't realise how different they can be in size, shape, shades of green, shape of leaves, etc. And the bark! Sometimes the bark is the most fascinating part of the trees.

The bark on the Spotted Gums or the Sribbly Bark gums are wonderful. Also the various shades of bark - pink, white, cream, gray, brown, are so lovely. And is there anything more evocative than the smell of burning gum leaves on a campfire or BBQ?

The Great Dividing Trail sounds like a marvelous walk/hike. Your pictures and story are great.

I don't think I have ever stopped by to visit you although I have seen your name everywhere I go. It's nice to meet you, finally and I will come back for another visit, if you don't mind.
